HONORS PROGRAM CLASSES

FALL 2013

Registration for honors classes and seminars is by seniority: students with 56 OR MORE HOURS can begin registering for honors courses on Thursday, April 11th; 24 OR MORE HOURS register on Monday, April 15th; and UP TO 23 HOURS on Wednesday, April 17th.  We have to go by the hours already earned and does not include hours taking this semester (Spring ’13).  All honors classes and seminars are on reserve and you need to register in person in Bradley Hall, Room 295.  You do not need to wait until you register for your other classes online but you do need to see your advisor to unencumber your registration.

BIO 575—03 Topics in Bioethics; TH  1:00-3:50; Dr. Keith Johnson

The aim of this course is to have you think about different bioethical issues.  We will do this through viewing movies, reading papers, case studies, and discussions.  In most cases, the topics will cover two or more weeks, with a movie on at least one of those days.  The second day will be set aside for discussion of the topic.  The Honors Program Office has a syllabus for additional information.

 It has been nearly three years since we were last able to offer this fascinating class that meets one of your general education science requirements.  Dr. Lozano is the perfect person to teach this introductory course in how astronomy helps us understand our place in the greater universe.  Take advantage of the opportunity this semester in case it doesn’t get offered again in the near future.

In this honors section of ENG 301: Argumentative Writing, we will learn something about both analyzing and composing both traditional adversarial arguments and the more recently developed formal Rogerian arguments, which entail entertaining and mediating among conflicting viewpoints.  We will find that argument, in the formal rhetorical sense is something we do all the time every day.  In fact, some have argued that “everything’s an argument.”  We’ll see.
