Abstact:
The engineering and materials
development before a race are critical to success on the track. The race can only be won in the pits
if a car was made a contender through utilizing every engineering and material advantage
possible within the limits of the rules. Examples
of important developments of which race teams have taken advantage will be given. Fertile areas where further improvements can be
made and where new innovations might be especially important will be discussed.
About Our Speaker:
Todd Holbert is currently the Chief
Engineer for Bill Davis Racing. He has
responsibility for cars in the Winston Cup, Busch, and ARCA circuits. The Caterpillar-sponsored #22 Car driven by Ward
Burton in the NASCAR Winston Cup series is the organizations primary focus. In 1999 Ward Burton won the pole position at
Michigan, finished second on three occasions, and is assured of a top ten finish in the
final Winston Cup points standings. Todd has
a BS in Chemical Engineering from Leheigh University.
He comes from a racing family and has been working on race cars since he was a
young boy. Todd will share his experiences at
Bill Davis Racing and the developmental process used by a NASCAR team.
Coffee Talk:
The growing attention to NASCAR
racing among the general public provided an excellent opportunity for Caterpillar to
spread its industry-leading image for quality. The
impact upon marketing Caterpillar machines, engines, and merchandise through NASCAR
sponsorship will be discussed.
