Abstact:
Looking back
over the last century, stainless steels were among the many profound
metallurgical discoveries of the period 1900-1915. Precipitation-hardened stainless steels were developed prior to
1930. The Chrysler Building, built in New York City in 1928, continues to shine
due to its “innovative” stainless steel trim.
Austentic stainless steels and alloys are not new, and were initially
developed for use in a wide range of corrosive environments at room and lower
temperatures. However, they continue to
find ever increasing use at higher temperatures. In the last 10-15 years, new
scientific knowledge has been obtained for precisely controlling alloying and
processing effects on microstructural evolution during creep. This knowledge
has enabled significant boosts in the creep-resistance of austenitic stainless
steels and alloys at high-temperatures.
In cases where high-performance austenitic stainless steels or alloys
are the choice material but lack strength, optimizing processing and alloy
composition can provide cost effective and reliable performance alternatives
over more costly Ni or Co-based superalloys.
About Our Speaker:
Dr. Phil Maziasz is a renowned expert on stainless steel alloying and aluminide intermetallics. He specializes in developing alloys with improved high temperature mechanical behavior. Dr. Maziasz holds 6 patents, was a 1994 Fellow of ASM, received an R&D 100 Award in 1990 for super creep-resistant austenitic stainless steels, and received a Lockheed-Martin Engergy Technical Achievement Award in 1996. He currently is the principle investigator for industry focused programs on improving high temperature strenth of wrought austenitic stainless steels for diesel and gas turbine engine applications. Dr Maziasz has a PH.D. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and his M.S. (Nuclear Engineering) and B.S. (Materials and Metallurgical Eng.) from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor.
Coffee Talk:
The Edison Project is a privately run school management company that has been hired by Peoria District 150 to manage 2 primary schools beginning this 1999-2000 school year. A representative from Peoria District 150 will present the curriculum and management advantages of the Edison Project and the promise it holds for improving public education in Peoria.
Special Announcemnt:
"Jerry Hoeft, Manager of Advanced Materials Technology at
Caterpillar Inc., has elected to retire and will be leaving the Peoria area in
mid November, 1999. Jerry will be
moving to Arizona to enjoy his retirement and will no longer be able to serve
the ASM Peoria Chapter as he has in the past.
We wish to acknowledge Jerry for all of his contributions and
accomplishments with ASM International and the ASM Peoria Chapter. Thank you for all the dedicated support
given to the ASM Peoria Chapter during your career, and good luck in your
retirement."
