CPT Plans Tax Day Survey
April 11, 2000

Monday, April 17, Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) will be offering a
"penny poll" at both the North Manchester post office and the central post
office in Elkhart. On that day many citizens will send their tax forms to
the Internal Revenue Service.

CPT will be providing an opportunity, for people entering the two post
offices, to tell IRS how to spend the money. Each passerby will be given
ten pennies and invited to deposit them as they feel appropriate in jars
labeled Military, Education, Housing/Health Care, Environment, Scientific
Research, Arts, and International Aid/Development. At the end of the day
the pennies will be counted and CPT will call IRS to tell them how the
people in Elkhart and North Manchester, according to these polls, would
like their tax monies to be spent.

Consistently the budget (without social security and highway trust funds)
has had about 50% going for military-related expenses. Popular polls over
the years reverse the priorities, calling for most money to be spent on
education, housing and health care and some of the smallest amounts on
military.

CPT is a spiritually-based violence reduction presence with teams
presently
in Hebron, Israel/Palestine; Chiapas, Mexico; and in New Brunswick, Canada
and recent delegations to Columbia and Vieques, Puerto Rico. For more
