PREAMBLE

 

It shall be the purpose of the Biology Undergraduate Society of Bradley University to serve the needs of all Bradley University undergraduates interested in biology by providing social and academic activities, resources, and support.

 

 

Article I- Name

 

Section 1        The name of this organization shall be Biology Undergraduate Society of Bradley University.  It shall also be known as the acronym B.U.G.S.

                                                                                                                              

Section 2        Similar organizations exist for similar purposes, yet there exists no affiliation between B.U.G.S. and the said organizations.  B.U.G.S., however, may, at intermittent times, attend meetings with such organizations for the betterment of the Bradley University organization, or for cooperative events.

 

 

Article II- Membership

 

Section 1        All undergraduate students of Bradley University, in good standing with the University, interested in biology are considered for members of B.U.G.S.   

Section 2        Any individual interested in full membership to this organization, who has an interest in the biological sciences may become a member of the organization through completion of a membership application.

 

Section 3        The membership of this organization will at all times contain at least 5 Bradley University students.

 

Section 4        Monetary dues, having been decided by the organization as $10.00/semester, shall be paid by all members of the organization in order to retain standing with the organization.

 

 

Section 5        If monetary dues are unable to be paid by any member due to personal inability, exceptions may be made for those students upon written request and recommendation by a quorum of the Executive Committee.

 

Section 6        This organization will not discriminate based on any characteristic listed in Bradley University’s Nondiscrimination Statement.

 

 

Article III- Officers

 

Section 1        The officers of the Executive Committee of this organization shall consist of at least four officers, consisting of but not limited to a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.  General duties for each office are as follows:

 

                                    A)  President:

i)   To preside at Executive Committee and membership meetings

ii)  To appoint special committees with the approval of the Executive Committee

iii)  To present a biannual report on the state of the organization

iv)                             To act as the link between this organization and the chair of the Bradley University Biology Department and other University personnel

v)                               To have final responsibility for the assignment and completion of all B.U.G.S. projects

vi)                             To perform other such duties as may be required by the By-Laws or resolutions of the Executive Committee.

 

B)     Vice President:

i)       To preside in the absence of the President; assume the office of president in cases of the president’s resignation or removal from office

ii)     To plan and organize publicity for activities and special events

iii)  To perform other such duties as may be required by the By-Laws of resolutions of the Executive Committee.


C)    Secretary: 

i)       To attend all general correspondence for the organization

ii)     To keep the minutes of all Executive Committee and membership meetings

iii)  To preserve the records of the organization

iv)   To perform other such duties as may be required by the By-Laws or resolutions of the Executive Committee.

 

D)    Treasurer:

i)       To supervise the financial administration of all revenue

ii)     To periodically give report to the Executive Committee and membership on the financial condition of the organization

iii)   To perform other such duties as may be required by the By-Laws or resolutions of the Executive Committee.

 

 

Section 2        The office of president must be filled by a Bradley University student of at least junior standing under the regulation of the University, a biological science major, a full member of the organization for at least one year, and at least one year of service on the exec board.   If no member meets these requirements the exec board at the time of the election may allow exemptions.

 

                        Members applying for the office of vice president, secretary, and treasurer must be full members of the organization for at least one year and a student at Bradley University.

                       

 

Section 3        Officers shall serve a term of one year, unless a two-thirds vote by executive committee allows for an extension of term.

 

Section 4        Officers are required to attend at least two-thirds of all Executive Committee meetings.  Repeated absences may be grounds for impeachment proceedings.

 

Section 5        Additional officers may be appointed by the president at any time to carry out specific duties (e.g. webmaster, historian).  Appointments must be approved by a quorum of the Executive Committee.

 

 

Section 6        Removal of officers

A)  Any full member may initiate impeachment proceedings against an officer during the fall or spring semesters under grounds of failure to fulfill the responsibilities of his/her office or for the violation of the articles of the Constitution.  Upon receiving a request for impeachment proceedings, the Executive Committee will schedule a B.U.G.S. General Meeting within three weeks.

 

B)                                          Officers may be removed by a two-thirds vote of the full membership at a B.U.G.S. General Meeting that is announced at least one week in advance.

 

C)    Quorum for removal of an officer is 30 full members or one-third of the membership, whichever is smaller.

 

 

Article IV- Elections

 

Section 1        Elections of president, vice president, secretary, and

treasurer shall occur in order on an annual basis during Spring semester at a B.U.G.S. General Meeting, unless otherwise cancelled by a quorum of Executive Committee.

 

Section 2        Any full member of this organization who will remain a registered Bradley University undergraduate the following year is eligible to vote in elections.

 

Section 3        Quorum for elections is 30 voting members or one-third of the membership, whichever is smaller.

 

Section 4        Any member is elected if he or she wins a majority of the full member’s votes.

 

Section 5        If more than two people are running and no one wins a majority, then the person with the fewest votes is dropped from the ballot and votes are recast in a run-off election.

 

Section 6        Officers take office the first day of the Fall semester following election proceedings.

 

 

 

 

Article V- Meetings

 

Section 1        General meetings shall be held at the discretion of the exec board

 

Section 2        Executive Committee meetings shall be held at least once per month during the fall and spring semesters.

 

Section 3        Quorum for Executive Committee meeting is one-half of its members.

 

Section 4        Meetings shall be presided over by the president, unless he/she is absent, in which case the vice president shall preside.

 

 

Article VI- Advisors

 

Section 1        There shall be 1 (one) full-time faculty/staff advisor who shall be member ex officio with no voting privileges.

 

Section 2        The advisor shall be selected upon the recommendation of a quorum of Executive Committee members.

 

Section 3        Duties or responsibilities of the advisor shall consist of advising the Executive Committee and full members on any decisions deemed fit and ensuring that the organization upholds all University regulations.  They should also make recommendations to the Executive Committee on any improvements to the organization or any problems found in the running of the organization that go against the stated purpose or Constitution.

 

 

Article VII- Amendment

 

Section 1        Amendments to this constitution may be proposed to the voting membership by majority vote of the Executive Committee or by petition signed by 1/10 of the voting membership.  Amendments shall be declared adopted which are presented at 2 general meetings and receive a majority favorable vote at both meetings by the voting members present, as well as a quorum of the Executive Committee.
