Committee Reports:
Recruitment and Relations Committee:
- David has heard good news from the Arizona State chapter of Psi Phi. They recently had a table at a club fair over there, and people signed up, which is very cool.
- Discussion begins over whether Monica is an active member, an alumni member, or both, like Ryan is.
Quiz Bowl Committee:
- The group met this Monday and played Tribond, of all things.
T-Shirt Committee:
- The committee is moving forward toward the final procurement of shirts, now that Joel has the orders from Purdue and ASU.
Movie Committee:
- We still have a committee. We should watch Sorcerer Hunters sometime.
No Report Committee:
- Chris A. gets to head the committee again this week, since he remembered what he was going to say last week.
- Chris quotes from Dr. Strangelove: "You can't fight in here; this is the War Room!"
Officers' Reports:
Communications Officer:
- Last week's minutes are up.
- A link to the Enterprise site from the Bradley Psi Phi mainpage is still in the process of being created.
- This week in MTH 310, Dr. McKenzie illustrated the concept of "if and only if" proofs with an example: "Suppose we have the statement 'A Star Trek show is good iff no Neelix.' Now obviously, the forward statement is true, but what about the reverse? Does 'no Neelix' guarantee that a Star Trek show will be good? Remember 'Spock's Brain'?"
Constable:
- Deputy Constable Carl is in charge this week, since the Constable is away.
- "Brain and brain! What is brain?" --Kara, "Spock's Brain"
- Everything's under control.
Grand Nagus:
- The current balance is $302.32, 2 pence and a calculator.
Chief of Operations:
- David has added two new bits of information to the Enterprise site: a chronology of references to events outside the series, and a chart of the Nielsen ratings for each airing of the shows so far.
- Speculation ensues on whether there exists a high correlation between number of fan service scenes per episode and high ratings.
First Officer:
- It's snowing, so beware of yetis!
- A comment heard on the First Officer's floor, hereby deemed a "Noahism": "I like my women like I like my coffee -- cold and bitter."
Captain:
- We have mail, so we sing "Letters."
- Mail:
- Volunteer Vibe propaganda for February
- Info from the SAO for Who's Who in American Colleges
- A flyer asking if the club wants to hold a fundraiser. (Once more, for the record, no, we don't.)
Old Business:
- Julie notes that we still have to pick up our flamingo from the Alumni Center and paint it by Monday in time for the Homecoming activities. Rachel and Ryan express slight interest in doing this, so they get the task.
- A straw poll taken suggests that at least four people will be going to next Sunday's convention.
New Business:
- Julie asks if the club will consider a motion to lend $50 to the Medieval College Society to cover advertising and food costs for B-CON on February 23-24. The motion is considered, made, and passed, 13-1, with 4 abstentions.
- Since we don't have a room reserved for next week's meeting due to the job fair, the Captain decides to try for the TV room on the main floor, or possibly one in the library.
Scifi News:
- David reports that many shows are being cancelled, or seem to be coming close to such.
- Special Unit 2 has been cancelled; the last episode airs on February 13.
- The Tick has been cancelled; the last episode aired last Thursday, although there remains one "lost" episode, produced but not aired, that may be shown in the summer.
- Roswell is likely cancelled, though the final word is not yet in.
- The Invisible Man has not been renewed for another season, which means that it, also, is effectively cancelled. The final episode airs this Friday on the Sci Fi Channel.
- But enough of this depressing news! David has books for us! Yay!
- ST: In the Name of Honor, by Dayton Ward. Its tagline: "Klingons vs. Klingons--with Kirk in the middle!" {Try not to think too much about that...}
- ST: SCE: Book One: Have Tech, Will Travel; and Book Two: Miracle Workers. These books deal with the adventures of the Da Vinci, a ship with an all-engineer crew.
- The Tron Special Edition DVD is now available. Some features include deleted scenes, storyboards, commentary, and making-of segments.
- The latest issue of ST: The Magazine features Connor Trinneer on the cover. Inside, you can find several nifty fold-outs of Captain Proton's rocket ship.
- The First Officer reports that Decipher has two LotR:TCG starter decks available for free download at their website. Ryan, on the other hand, reports that Wizards of the Coast is not nice, because of their plans for the Star Wars card game licenses.
- Landon says that the DVD box set of Neon Genesis Evangelion is due out soon.
- The title of Austin Powers 3 is being changed by New Line, due to a current lawsuit by MGM/UA that claims the working title, "Goldmember," is too similar to the Bond film "Goldfinger," and that the AP folks didn't get the proper permission to do it this time, like they did for the first two films. Subsequently, a whole lot of merchandise is being either relabelled or recalled. Among other things, this may affect the home release of the LotR: The Fellowship of the Ring, as AP 3 is reported to have a trailer on it.
- Star Wars: Episode II toys are now being revealed at www.starwars.com. Today, the Jedi Dex from Tiger was unveiled. It's basically a pocket organizer with a comprehensive library of characters and information from the movie.
- Also, it has been reported that Episode II will be entirely digitally recorded.
- This past Monday, A&E ran a two-hour Biography special on George Lucas.
- Marisa reports that the Eschaflowne movie will be released soon in American theaters, and that the first episode of the Fushigi Yuugi original video animation III will soon be out.
- Chris A. calls everyone's attention to the fact that since Bill Gates has made a very generous donation to a certain Carribbean government, he now effectively "owns Haiti."
- Julie shoots the Captain. As punishment, she in back in control of the club.
