“Re-fire” with Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) encourages people ages 50 and older to engage in thought-provoking and enjoyable continuing education. OLLI has planned the following events this fall:

September 19, 2009

Redefining Retirement is a daylong workshop that will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Michel Student Center. The event is designed to help participants prepare for the lifestyle, financial, and health changes that come with retirement. Keynote speaker and author Dr. Cynthia Barnett, will discuss “Easing the Transition into Retirement,” and participants will receive a signed copy of her book, Prime Time Makeover. Barnett spent 30 years as an educator before retiring to “Re-fire” her life. Participants will also choose a workshop series: Transitioning Into Retirement, Creative Retirement During Turbulent Times, and Proactive Approaches to Healthy Living. The $10 participation fee includes materials, Barnett’s book, breakfast, lunch, and a cocktail reception. Register by September 16 at bradley.edu/continue.

October 2, 2009

OLLI is marking the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth by visiting the places Lincoln frequented as a young adult near Petersburg, Ill. Canoe expert Scott Hewitt will lead a beginner-level, five-mile float down the Sangamon river while giving a history lesson on Lincoln’s life. Participants will then visit historic New Salem State Park and will take a step back in time as they visit the village where Lincoln lived for six years, seeing it just as it would have looked nearly 200 years ago. The $81 participation fee includes charter bus transportation, canoe rental and training session, docent fees, dinner, and snacks. The program runs from 1:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Register by September 14 at bradley.edu/continue.

October 20-23, 2009

Discover the beautiful scenery and history of Southern Illinois on a four-day trip to Carbondale to learn about the area’s natural history, wineries, and scientific studies. Enjoy presentations about the Civilian Conservation Corps, hike on trails through Giant City State Park’s autumn forests, and paddle the still waters of Little Grassy Lake on an optional canoe trip. Spend a day traveling the Shawnee Wine Trail and stop at several wineries to meet local vintners and discover the process they use to create their delicious wines. Finally, visit Southern Illinois University’s department of geology for a tour of Parkinson Lab, home to the University’s earthquake seismology and geology lab. The $497 (double occupancy) or $632 (single occupancy) fee includes charter bus transportation, three nights at the Hampton Inn, all meals, hiking and canoeing fees, docent fees, and snacks. Register by September 25 at bradley.edu/continue.
