Fond memories of sewing class

CHARLENE “SKIP” BECKER CRAVENS ’52 treasures her childhood memories of going to Bradley Hall for sewing lessons in the early 1940s. She and her classmates from St. Mark's Catholic School periodically visited Bradley, where each student received a tin box with scissors, a tape measure, and pins. In one class, the girls purchased material to make an apron; the young seamstresses created a broomstick skirt in another class. Each girl worked on a treadle machine, and Cravens remembers the classes being taught by the head of the Sewing Department. “It gave us a taste of sewing and a taste of Bradley’s campus,” says Cravens. Some of Cravens’ classmates also remember classes in cooking and first aid.

While no photos could be found of the students visiting Bradley’s campus in the ’40s, there is evidence that Bradley students in various divisions of the Home Economics Department went to area grade schools to do their “practice teaching” in sewing and cooking. The following photos are from the June 1923 Home Economics Department bulletin and portray Bradley students teaching, cooking, and sewing.
