When the lives of Mahmoud, a Muslim Sheikh (Omar Sharif) and Boulos, a Christian Theologian (Adel Imam) are threatened by religious extremists on both sides, the Egyptian government inducts them into a witness protection program that requires them to disguise themselves as the Christian Marcus and a Muslim Sheikh, Hassan el-Attar, respectively. Edward Said: The Myth of the Clash of Civilization
PHL DVD0493

In this important lecture delivered at the University of Massachusetts, Said takes aim at one of the central tenets of recent foreign policy thinking-- that conflicts between different and clashing "civilizations" (Western, Islamic, COnfucian) characterize the contemporary world. This illuminating documentary is a visual meditation on the phenomenon of pilgrimage and, to a lesser extent, on the processes of ethnographic filmmaking. It combines images of traditional and modern Japan, excerpts from the writings of Kobo Daishi, and commentary by pilgrims, everyday Japanese, and the filmmakers themselves to explore the meaning and persistence of "pilgrimage" in contemporary industrial Japan. Edward Said: On Orientalism
PHL DVD0494

Edward Said's book Orientalism has been profoundly influential in a diverse range of disciplines since its publication in 1978. In this engaging and lavishly illustrated interview he talks about the context within which the book was conceived, its main themes, and how its original thesis relates to the contemporary understanding of "the Orient." Said argues that the Western (especially American) understanding of the Middle East as a place full of villains and terrorists ruled by Islamic fundamentalism produces deeply disorted image of the diversity and complexity of millions of Arab peoples. He unearths the intellectual roots of "orientalism" in the history of imperial conquest stemming back to the 18th century. Looking ahead to the 21st century, he argues that it is this legacy of "difference" and mistrust that must be overcome if conflict, discord and violence are not to be humanity's permanent future.
