Satellite Dreaming
SOC DVD0372

Australia's Aboriginal population tuned in, like everyone else in the country, to national Australian television, which was targeted at a predominantly white Western audience and either ignored the Aborigines or showed them a patently false image of their own culture. In response, Aboriginal people began producing their own programming. This program moves between the polish of the contemporary urban show and the raw energy of a desert, "inma" to show how Aboriginal people use television to promote and preserve their culture. Darryl, his wife, and his four children live in domestic bliss in a ramshackle yet proud domicile neighboring the airport. But that serenity is threatened when the government issues a compulsory acquisition order, which means the Kerrigans must vacate their home to make way for an airport expansion project. And even though he makes a hobby of buying useless junk as long as he gets it for bargain price, no amount of compensation money will convince Darryl to relinquish his "castle," which stores the family's collective memories and symbolizes their unique character. Darryl organizes the other affected neighbors, hires a bumbling attorney/family friend, and pursues his battle in court. However, he soon discovers he needs more than gumption and spitfire earnestness to support a case in front of the magistrates of Australia's high courts. PAL/DVD/Color/81 minutes

Quiet Rage: The Stanford Prison Experiment
SOC DVD0437

In the summer of 1971, Philip Zimbardo, Craig Haney and Curtis Banks carried out a psychological experiment to test a simple question: What happens when you put good people in an evil place- does humanity win over evil, or does evil triumph? To explore this question, college student volunteers were pretested and randomly assigned to play the role of prisoner or guard in a simulated prison at Stanford University. Although the students were mentally healthy and knew they were taking part in an experiment, some guards soon became sadistic and the prisoners showed signs of acute stress and depression. After only six days, the planned two week study spun out of control and had to be ended to prevent further abuse of the prisoners. This dramatic demonstration of the power of social situations is relevant to many institutional settings, such as the Abu Ghraib Prison in Iraq. This DVD contains a 50 minute documentary film as well as a bonus 70 image slide show of archival photographs from the study. The film, Quiet Rage, has been shown in thousands of classrooms around the world and is sure to stimulate critical thinking and discussion. Narrated by Philip Zimbardo, the documentary uses orginal footage, flashbacks, post-experiment interviews with the prisoners and guards, and comparisons with real-life prisons. Phillip Zombardo is a professor at Stanford University and internationally recognized scholar, educator, and media personlality, winning numerous awards in each of these areas. He is also a former president of the American Psychological Association and author of more than 300 publications. 50 minutes

Declining by Degrees: Higher Education at Risk
SOC DVD0186

American higher education is, in many ways, "declining by degrees." Our national commitment to provide every qualified student, regardless of economic status, an opportunity to go to college has weakened. In many college classrooms, an unspoken "understanding" allows as many as 20% of students to coast their way to a diploma without really learning much at all. This decline is occurring at the same time other countries are investing heavily in higher education, recognizing its critical role in the future. It's a far more serious situation than the American public realizes, but not irreversible. Veteran correspondent John Merrow takes viewers behind the scenes of American higher education to experience college through the eyes of students, professors, and college administrators. Set on four different college campuses across the country- a private liberal arts college, a major state university, a regional public university, and a community college - Declining by Degrees examines both the promise and the peril in higher education today.
