Citizen Kane

Citizen Kane, 1941, was most stunning debut of a director in history of American film. Written, directed, produced & starring 25 year old Orson Wells, film was a triumph for already successful young radio & theater man. A masterpiece of filmmaking techniques, it still stands as one of greatest films of all time. Character was based on newspaper tycoon William Randolph Herst. Herst waged war against RKO & Wells to try to suppress film. He banned any mention of film in his newspapers & offered to reimburse RKO for all expenses related to film if they would destroy prints & negatives. RKO refused & Hearst used his papers to begin an attack on the film. RKO withstood pressure & Citizen Kane opened - 4 months late. B&W 119 min.
