Before dawn on Aug. 12, 2000, four of America's best young climbers were sleeping on their portaledges high on Mount Zhiotaya Stena in the Pamir Alai mountain range of Central Asia. By daybreak they would be be captured at gunpoint by Islamic terrorists and marched for six days through freezing, treacherous mountains with little food, no clean water, and the constant threat of execution.
