Virginia's chief medical examiner, Dr. Kay Scarpetta, back from a murder
investigation in Dublin, finds that the same killer has struck in her home
state. After the investigation, the killer boldly contacts Scarpetta via
the Internet. When Scarpetta discovers that the victim contracted a rare
virus before her death, she knows that she herself may be infected.
Apparently, the killer possesses deadly and sophisticated knowledge which
she suspects is directed specifically at her.
