During a blizzard in northern New York state, a young writer is visited by Azriel the Ghost, who tells an astonishing tale. As a young Jew in Persia in 600 B.C., Azriel is sacrificed, but becomes immortal, a spirit battling for the good of mankind. He eventually finds himself in present day New York City, witness to a murder. He also meets Gregory Belkin, a diabolical leader of a religious cult, wherein begins a struggle between good and evil which forms the climax of this novel.
