The Golden Rope
Susan Fromberg Schaeffer
Florence Meek, a painter of note, disappears at age 27, at the height of
her fame. She is fiercely mourned by her twin, Doris, the "unsuccessful"
one who has to live with the shattering discovery that Florence has denied
her very existence. Doris's search for Florence becomes secondary to her
quest through the past for clues to the curious and complex nature of
their relationship. As the novel moves back and forth through time, and
from New York to London to Provence to Vermont, Doris struggles to make
sense of her life, the mystery of her twinship, and identity itself.
