MEGAN LOOS/BRADLEY SCOUT
President Joanne K. Glasser meets with a student during her first open office hours.
Bradley University President Joanne K. Glasser opened her office to students for two hours Wednesday afternoon, welcoming students to meet her one-on-one to discuss whatever concerns were on their minds.
It was the first time President Glasser held office hours since she came to Bradley and the first time in memory a Bradley president opened their door to students. Indeed, it is unusual for any university president throughout the nation to welcome students for individual, informal discussions.
"[Glasser] created such a relaxed atmosphere," social studies and secondary education major Jeff Purple '11 told the Bradley Scout. "She wasn't sitting behind a desk, which was awesome. You just got to sit in a chair and talk to the president."
About 20 students came to her office in Swords Hall between 4 and 6 p.m. to discuss a wide range of subjects.
"It was very enlightening and productive," said President Glasser, who was pleased with the turnout. "Each student showed a genuine interest in improving the University with thoughtful suggestions and questions."
Students talked with President Glasser about recycling, graduate assistantships, the Pre-Law Center, a university mascot and more. No topic was off limits. Students were given about five minutes each so that as many students as possible could be included.
"The concerns, ideas and perspectives of our students are vital to ensuring the Bradley Experience remains memorable for future students," she said. "Such personal communications with students is critical to keeping a pulse on the campus and keeping me connected with students."
President Glasser plans to hold office hours for students once a month. Her next office hours are scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2009, from 5:00-7:00 pm.
