The Bradley softball team needs a new pair of dancing shoes.
The Braves won their first Missouri Valley Conference championship Saturday with a 2-0 victory over perennial MVC power Creighton at EastSide Centre in East Peoria.
By winning the league championship, Bradley earns the MVC’s automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. The Braves will play DePaul on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the first round of the Women's College World Series.
Bradley's victory extends its winning streak to nine games, the program's longest since 2004. Bradley won behind a pair of solo home runs by junior Jacqueline Vitale and senior Miriam Wegmann.
Ashley Birdsong earned her 19th victory of the season, allowing two hits in seven shutout innings. The MVC tournament MVP maintained the shutout when junior Amanda Clack caught a potential game-tying, two-run home run by Creighton’s Bailey Dawson in the fourth inning.
This was Bradley's first appearance in the MVC championship game since 1996 and fourth in program history. The Braves also played for the title in 1985 and 1986.
